When you hear the word meditation, what comes to mind?
A quiet room? A cushion on the floor?
Soft chants or incense?
For some, that’s nourishing.
But for many of us, that image feels far away—too perfect, too still, too... not us.
Here’s the truth: meditation doesn’t have to look like anything you’ve seen online or in a studio.
It doesn’t have to be spiritual.
It doesn’t even have to be quiet.
Centering yourself is about returning to a steady place within—and there are so many ways to get there.
What Meditation Really Is
At its core, meditation is presence.
It's giving your mind one place to rest.
It's creating a little bit of space between you and the swirl of everything else.
You don’t have to become someone different to do that.
You just have to become more fully you.

My Version? Drum and Bass.
This might surprise you—but one of the ways I center best is by listening to heavy drum and bass music.
That pulsing rhythm?
It focuses my thoughts.
It grounds me.
It brings me back to my breath.
It doesn’t look like traditional meditation—but it is a meditation.
It's a practice that lets me come home to myself.
What Might Work for You
Here are just a few examples of what meditation might look like outside the box:
A long drive with the windows down and your favorite song on repeat
Walking slowly, feeling each step, letting your breath guide you
Sitting on your couch with a warm drink, eyes closed, noticing sounds
Journaling with music in the background, not to solve anything—just to be
Cooking something with care and attention, letting your hands lead
If it brings you back to your body, your breath, your awareness... it counts.
You Don’t Need Permission
You don’t have to wait until your house is quiet.
You don’t need to light a candle or know a mantra. You can center yourself in the middle of your life—right here, as you are.
Because meditation isn’t about escaping the chaos. It's about finding your light within it.
Want to try it? Set a timer for 5 minutes today.
Pick one thing that brings you into focus—music, movement, breath, anything—and let it carry you inward.
Then, just notice.
That’s it.
That’s the practice.
