When the Universe Speaks in Signs

After Derek died, the signs began almost immediately.
A bee hovering over my hand.
A dragonfly following me as I commuted into the city.
A license plate that spelled out words that felt too direct to dismiss: I’m not dead.
Numbers that carried meaning, people introducing themselves to me in the strangest places.
These synchronicities didn’t just soothe me.
They guided me.
In those raw months of grief, I couldn’t see a way forward.
But the signs gave me direction, small breadcrumbs dropped along a path I didn’t yet know how to walk.
They reminded me that love doesn’t end, that even when someone is gone, the connection lives on in ways we can’t always explain.
And the signs didn’t stop with grief.
They showed up in love, too, though in a different, more complicated way.

A birthday repeating through strangers.
A name surfacing when I least expected it.
Even a meme landing on my screen that felt written just for me.
These synchronicities or signs in grief always seemed to arrive when the air between me and someone I loved felt heavy or uncertain, like a whisper saying: pay attention.
What I’ve learned is that signs are rarely straightforward predictions.
They are mirrors as much as messages.
Sometimes they reflect back what we’re carrying inside, our longing, our ache, our deep need for connection.
Other times, they nudge us toward possibility, lighting up a road we didn’t even know we were on.
I’ve had synchronicities show me more than comfort.
They’ve also revealed pathways I wouldn’t have taken otherwise.
Once, at a work event, I unexpectedly ran into a group of old colleagues.
That moment cracked something open, reminding me that new professional doors were waiting — and that I wasn’t meant to stay still.
The universe was saying: This way, keep moving.
The signs aren’t always literal.
They don’t always hand us certainty.
But they do remind us that life is layered, mysterious, and alive with meaning if we’re willing to see it. Sometimes they help us survive the unbearable.
Sometimes they encourage us to take the next step.
And sometimes, yes, they hint at what might be waiting just ahead.
They are breadcrumbs scattered along the path, healing, guiding, and reminding us we are never as lost as we feel.
Reflection for You
Have you noticed signs or synchronicities that felt too precise to dismiss?
Did they bring comfort, guidance, or a sense of possibility?
What might the breadcrumbs in your own life be pointing you toward right now?
An Invitation to Pause
Signs are not always answers, but they are invitations to pause, to listen, to trust that you’re being guided. If you’d like to sink deeper into that kind of gentle listening, I’ve recorded a meditation in The Secret Garden, a series within The Lighthouse membership. You can explore it here and take a few quiet minutes for yourself.
